Why the advertised rate is not your rate
Every lender advertises its floor. "Rates from 9.99 percent" means one borrower somewhere got 9.99 percent, and the range above it runs to the 35 percent legal cap. Where you land depends on your credit, your documented income, how much of that income is already committed, and the term you choose. Two people applying to the same lender on the same day routinely get different numbers, which is why comparing advertised rates across the personal loans market tells you almost nothing until you have quotes.
Our guide to how loan interest rates are set in Canada covers what places you in the range. This page is about comparing the offers once you have them.
Compare on APR, not the rate
The annual percentage rate folds mandatory fees into one number. The interest rate does not. A loan at 12.99 percent with a 5 percent origination fee costs more than a loan at 14.99 percent with no fee, and the only figure that shows you that is the APR. Ask every lender for the APR on your actual offer, in writing, before you sign anything. A lender that quotes a rate and will not quote an APR is quoting the part that flatters it.
$10,000 over 48 months: rate versus fee
| Lender | Advertised rate | Fee | Monthly payment | Total cost |
| Lender A, 12.99% APR plus a 5% origination fee | 12.99% | $500 | $281.64 a month | $3,518.56 over 48 months |
| Lender B, 14.99% APR, no fee | 14.99% | none | $278.26 a month | $3,356.33 over 48 months |
The higher advertised rate is the cheaper loan.
Illustrative example, not quoted offers: $10,000 over 48 months at the rates shown, with the origination fee added to the amount financed. Your rate and fees depend on your credit and lender.
Compare on total cost, not the payment
A longer term always lowers the monthly payment and almost always raises what you pay. Lenders lead with the payment because it is the number that feels affordable. Ask instead for total cost to the end of the term, then choose the shortest term whose payment you could still make in a bad month. That single discipline saves more money than any rate negotiation.
To compare terms on your own number, the personal loan calculator prices any amount, rate and term.
Shop without damaging your credit
- Check your own credit first. A soft inquiry with no score effect, and it tells you which range to expect.
- Do not apply lender by lender. Each direct application is a hard inquiry, and a cluster reads as urgency to the next lender who looks.
- Use one application across many lenders. A platform matches your profile to several lenders at once, which is how you see your real range without collecting inquiries.
- Get the fee schedule in writing before you commit. Origination, administration, prepayment penalty, NSF. If a lender will not put them in writing, that is your answer.
When Canadians apply, and why it matters
Applications are not evenly spread. Across Smarter Loans personal loan applications from August 2025 to July 2026, Tuesday busiest at 18.3% of applications, Sunday quietest at 12.4%, and by month, May busiest at 12.4% of the year, September quietest at 6.2%. The practical use of that: online lenders decide at any hour, but funding runs on bank transfer windows, so applying early in the week gets money moving sooner than a Friday night application will.
The four questions to ask every lender
- What is my APR, not your advertised rate?
- What is the total cost to the end of the term?
- What are all the fees, in writing?
- Is there a penalty if I repay early?

Frequently asked questions
What is a good personal loan rate in Canada?
A good rate is one near the bottom of your own credit band's range, not near the bottom of the market. Strong credit sees single digits to low teens at banks and credit unions; fair credit online usually sees the twenties. Comparing offers within your band matters more than chasing an advertised floor you cannot reach.
Does comparing loan rates hurt your credit?
Checking your own credit does not. Applying to several lenders separately does, because each is a hard inquiry. One application through a platform that matches multiple lenders avoids the stacking entirely.
Can I negotiate a lower loan rate?
Sometimes with a bank or credit union, especially holding a competing written offer. Rarely with online lenders, where the price is set by the file. The bigger lever is the term and the fees, both of which are negotiable more often than the rate.
