Getting the money takes longer than getting the decision, and that gap is where most of the waiting happens. This report sets out both timelines and how funding speed changes with the size of the loan. It ends with the usual reasons funding slows down.

Smaller loans were funded faster
Funding is slower than approval because the loan still has to be signed, checked and sent. Smaller loans were funded faster. Of loans under $1,500, 76 percent were funded within 72 hours.
Larger loans took longer, and the table compares the two sizes among people funded within 20 days in the same Smarter Loans applications:
| Measure | Under $1,500 | $1,500 and up |
|---|---|---|
| Funded within 72 hours | 76% | 42% |

If the money has to arrive by a set date, apply early, and allow more time for a larger amount.
What slows funding down
Speed varies from one lender to the next, and a few common steps can add days between approval and money:
- Verification: many lenders confirm your identity, income and bank account before they send funds. A missing document or a slow reply can hold the file.
- Transfer timing: some lenders pay by Interac e-Transfer and some by direct deposit. A deposit sent after banking hours, on a weekend or on a holiday may not arrive until the next business day.
- Approvals that lapse: an approval is an offer that can expire. If the agreement is not signed and the last steps are not finished in time, the offer lapses and you may need to apply again.
Replying quickly to a lender's requests is the part of the timeline you can speed up yourself.

About this data
Approvals by the approving lenders in our network. The figures cover personal loan applications to Smarter Loans submitted between 6 August and 19 September 2026. An applicant counts as approved or funded if a lender showed that decision within 20 days, even if it later lapsed. Times run from when the application reached a lender in our network, and times are when the lender reported each decision to us.
Funding times count only people funded within 20 days, so slower fundings are not included. Figures are averages and shares, and no lender is named or compared.
