Why this column
Reports to. A product that reports to neither Equifax nor TransUnion rebuilds nothing, and several on the market do not say which, or either.
The cost that decides it
What each product costs over twelve months against what it is likely to move. A $10 monthly fee is $120 a year, which is worth it if the score improvement unlocks a lower rate and is not if you were going to qualify anyway.
Common questions
How fast can I improve my credit score?
Payment history updates monthly, so the first movement typically shows after two or three on-time payments, with meaningful improvement over six to twelve months. Nothing legitimate moves a score in days.
Does a credit builder loan give me money?
Some hold the funds until the term completes and release them at the end; others advance a small amount up front. The reporting is the product rather than the money, so check which structure you are getting.
Secured card or credit builder loan?
A secured card needs a deposit but gives you a usable card and builds revolving credit history. A builder loan needs a monthly payment and builds instalment history. Credit scores reward having both types, so people rebuilding seriously often run one of each.
Will these work if I have no credit history at all?
Yes, and a thin file is easier to build than a damaged one. Most products here accept applicants with no history, and several do not check credit at all.
