Why this column
Claims channel. How you actually file and whether you can do it online is the only thing that matters when you need the policy, and almost no comparison site publishes it.
The cost that decides it
What your lender requires by product: comprehensive and collision on a financed vehicle, property coverage naming the lender on a mortgage, and what happens if coverage lapses.
Common questions
What insurance does my lender actually require?
On a financed vehicle, comprehensive and collision coverage with the lender named as loss payee. On a mortgage, property insurance naming the lender. Lenders can and do place their own coverage at your expense if yours lapses, usually at several times the cost.
Why do quotes vary so much between insurers?
Insurers weight the same facts differently. One may price heavily on postal code, another on vehicle type or claims history. That is why comparing three or four quotes on the same coverage is worth the half hour.
Does public auto insurance apply where I live?
British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have public auto insurers with mandatory basic coverage, so private options there are limited to optional add-ons. Everywhere else in Canada auto insurance is fully private.
Does making a claim raise my premium?
Usually yes for an at-fault claim, and often for several years. A small at-fault claim can cost more in premium increases than it pays out, which is worth calculating before filing.
