Before you borrow

Worth checking first
Clinic payment plans
Many dental and medical practices arrange interest-free instalments directly. Always ask before financing elsewhere.
Check your benefits and provincial coverage
Workplace plans, spousal plans, and provincial programs for children, seniors and low-income households cover more than most people claim.
Health spending accounts
If you have one through work or a corporation, it pays for eligible costs with pre-tax dollars.
These options cost less than borrowing. We list them because a loan is not always the right answer, even on a page about loans.

Medical borrowing in Canada is small and immediate

Canada has public healthcare, so medical borrowing here funds what public coverage does not: prescriptions, dental work, vision, mobility aids, physiotherapy beyond covered limits, and travel to appointments.

The data shows exactly that shape. Medical-purpose requests average $459 at everyday scale and $4,700 at instalment scale, both below the all-purpose averages of $495 and $6,061.

Medical requests sit below the all-purpose average at both scales. This is not funding large planned procedures. It is covering gaps.

Check these before borrowing

Several of them are larger than the loan being considered.

Provincial drug programs. Every province has a catastrophic or income-based drug plan. Ontario's Trillium, and equivalents elsewhere, cap annual prescription costs by household income.

Disability Tax Credit. Claimable retroactively for up to ten years. For someone eligible who has not claimed, the refund frequently exceeds the amount being borrowed, and it is not borrowed money.

Medical expense tax credit. Eligible expenses above a threshold are claimable annually, including many people assume are not.

Provider payment plans. Dental offices and physiotherapy clinics routinely arrange no-interest instalments. It is standard practice and rarely advertised.

Employer or spousal benefits coordination. Two plans can often be combined to cover more than either alone.

Borrowing for it

If the gap remains after those, the amounts here are usually small, and at small amounts the product structure matters more than the rate.

Bree and Nyble offer 0% advances. 15 lenders lend below $1,500.

Common questions

Can I get a loan for dental work in Canada?

Yes. Dental is one of the most common medical borrowing purposes because it is largely outside public coverage. Ask the practice about a payment plan first, as many offer no-interest instalments.

How much do Canadians borrow for medical expenses?

An average of $459 at everyday scale and $4,700 at instalment scale.

Can I get a medical loan on disability income?

Yes.

Is there help before borrowing?

Provincial drug programs, the Disability Tax Credit, the medical expense tax credit and provider payment plans all cost less than a loan. Several are larger than the typical amount borrowed here.
