What Happened to the Canada Carbon Rebate

The Canada Carbon Rebate has ended

The Canada Carbon Rebate, known before 2024 as the climate action incentive payment, no longer exists. On 15 March 2025 the Government of Canada stopped the federal fuel charge and the Canada Carbon Rebate for individuals. The fuel charge came off on 1 April 2025, and the final quarterly payment was issued from 22 April 2025. The rebate provisions were repealed effective 1 October 2025.

There are no payments in 2026, and there is no federal programme replacing it. If you are searching for a 2026 carbon rebate payment date, there is not one.

Why it ended

The rebate existed to return the money raised by the federal fuel charge. Households received it quarterly, tax free, as a basic amount plus a supplement for residents of small and rural communities. It was never a subsidy funded from general revenue.

When the fuel charge was removed, the revenue that funded the rebate went with it. That is the whole mechanism: no charge, no proceeds, no rebate.

What is still live: late filers

One part of the programme is still running. If you were eligible and have not yet filed a tax return for 2024, 2023, 2022 or 2021, the CRA can still issue the payments you were entitled to for those years once your return is assessed.

The payment follows assessment, so filing a late return is the only way to receive it. The CRA sets out what to do on the page linked above. This applies to past entitlement only, and nothing about it restarts the programme.

What the payment used to be

The rebate was paid four times a year, in January, April, July and October, to anyone who filed a return and met the residency test in a province where the federal fuel charge applied. The amount depended on province and household size, with the rural supplement on top. No application was needed beyond filing a return.

Those figures are historical. Do not use an old quarterly amount to budget for anything in 2026.

If you were counting on the payment

For households that budgeted around the quarterly deposit, the practical effect is one fewer payment in the year from April 2025 onward. Other federal and provincial benefit payments are unaffected and continue on their own schedules.

This page is kept as a record because the question is still asked. The short answer is that the Canada Carbon Rebate closed in 2025, the last payment went out in April 2025, and only late filers of an earlier return have anything left to receive.
