Amazon Selling & FBA Profit Basics
How Amazon sellers make money
Amazon sellers win by mastering unit economics and velocity. Unit economics are driven by realized price (after coupons and returns), referral fee (category-based), FBA fulfillment, COGS, inbound freight, storage/handling, other per-unit costs, and ad spend. Velocity is driven by visibility (SEO + ads), reviews, availability, and conversion rate. This calculator helps you understand the first part so you can confidently scale the second.
Know your fee stack
- Referral fee — % of sale price based on category.
- FBA fulfillment — pick, pack, ship by size/weight tier.
- Storage — monthly storage (seasonal) + aged inventory fees.
- Ads — monthly budget converted to spend per unit.
Fee percentages vary by marketplace and change over time. Always verify current rate cards.
Improve profitability
- Raise price or reduce coupons while watching conversion.
- Reduce COGS or shift size tier to lower FBA fee.
- Optimize Ads to spend where contribution margin stays positive.
- Manage returns via quality control and clear listings.
Amazon vs. Your Own Online Store (DTC)
Factor | Amazon Seller | Own Brand (DTC) |
---|---|---|
Traffic | High built-in demand; competitive. | Must generate via SEO/ads/social. |
Fees | Referral %, FBA, storage, ads. | Payment processing, 3PL, platform, ads. |
Control | Limited customer data; policy constraints. | Full control of data & brand. |
Speed to launch | Fast (list quickly). | Slower (site, logistics, pixels). |
Margin potential | Constrained by fees/competition. | Higher potential with retention/LTV. |
Trust/Conversion | Prime + reviews boost conversion. | Must build trust signals. |

Amazon Profit & FBA FAQs
What fees are included automatically
The calculator includes a category-typical referral fee % from the preset you choose, plus your inputs for FBA fulfillment, storage, COGS, inbound shipping, other costs, and your Amazon Ads monthly budget (converted to ad spend per unit).
How do ads affect profit if I only enter a monthly budget
We divide your monthly ad budget by your expected monthly units to determine ad spend per unit. This keeps the math transparent and avoids confusing ad ratios.
What is FBM and why does it matter
FBM stands for Fulfilled by Merchant. When a portion of orders is FBM, those units avoid FBA fulfillment fees but you should account for your own shipping/fulfillment costs under “Other” or COGS.
How is break-even price calculated
Break-even price is the price at which total per-unit revenue equals all per-unit costs (including referral %, FBA, ads per unit, storage, inbound, COGS, and other). At this price, profit per unit = $0.
Can I use this for non-FBA (FBM only)
Yes. Set % FBM orders to 100% and set FBA fee to $0, then include your own shipping/fulfillment costs under “Other” or COGS.
